Who buys 14 inch pizza boxes?

A 14 inch pizza is the large on most UK takeaway menus. It sits between the 12 inch medium and the 16 inch family size. For many shops it is the size that leaves the counter most often on a Friday night.

The buyers are pizzerias and takeaways with a steady delivery run, dark kitchens cooking one menu for several brands, and pubs that serve a large pizza to share at the table. Street food vans sell larges at match days and markets too, where one box feeds a group standing round it.

This page covers the large box only. For smaller and bigger boxes, see the full Pizza Boxes by Size range.

What size box does a 14 inch pizza need?

A 14 inch (356 mm) pizza goes in a box 14.25 x 14.25 x 1.75 in (362 x 362 x 44 mm). That quarter inch leaves about 3 mm of space on each side, so the base slides in off the peel without the crust catching on a wall.

PizzaBox inside sizeDepth
12 inch (305 mm)12.25 x 12.25 in (311 x 311 mm)1.75 in (44 mm)
14 inch (356 mm)14.25 x 14.25 in (362 x 362 mm)1.75 in (44 mm)
16 inch (406 mm)16.25 x 16.25 in (413 x 413 mm)1.75 in (44 mm)

Hand-stretched dough rarely comes out exactly round. If your larges often spread past 14 inch on a busy night, move up a size rather than pressing the edge against the wall.

The 1.75 in depth clears a normal topped crust with room for melted cheese. Deep pan larges need a deeper box made to the size you send us.

Every standard size sits side by side in our guide to pizza box sizes in inches and mm.

Which board suits a 14 inch pizza box?

For a large pizza on a delivery run, B-flute is the usual choice. At about 3 mm, its wall is roughly twice as thick as E-flute. That keeps a wide lid flat under a stack and stops the base sagging when a driver lifts the box by one edge.

B-flute also holds heat a little longer than E-flute because the wall is thicker. The same thinking applies to 16 inch boxes, where the span is wider still.

E-flute, at about 1.5 mm, still works for counter collection. If the customer carries the box a few minutes to a car, the thinner board does the job and folds a touch faster.

For the full reasoning, read our E-flute vs B-flute comparison.

Printing on the lid and sides

A 14 inch lid is a big flat face. Your logo, phone number and web address fit on it without crowding, with space left for a short line about your menu.

One colour red on brown kraft looks warm and simple, much like a classic takeaway box. White board shows colours brighter, so full colour artwork and fine line drawings stay crisp. A dark full colour lid with white line art stands out in a pile of plain boxes.

You can print the sides as well, so your name shows when boxes stand stacked on a counter. A message inside the lid is seen the moment the customer opens it. A printed 14 inch lid can also be finished with a matt or gloss varnish.

To see your logo on the lid before you order, use the Design Your Pizza Box page.

How does a large pizza box let steam out?

A 14 inch pizza gives off more steam than a small one, because there is simply more hot dough and topping inside. Trapped steam softens the crust before the box reaches the door.

Side vents punched in the walls let that moisture escape while the lid stays shut. On a box this wide, vents on two sides give the air a shorter path out than a single vent at the front.

Keep the vents clear when you load a bag. Do not tape over them or press a menu flyer flat against them on a busy night.

How the box folds and locks

Each box arrives flat as one die-cut sheet. Folding takes a few seconds once your team has done a dozen or so before service.

  1. Lay the sheet print side down with the base panel nearest you.
  2. Raise the front and back walls of the wide base along their crease lines.
  3. Turn the corner flaps inwards so they sit against the side wall panels.
  4. Fold the side walls up and over the corner flaps to lock them in place.
  5. Bring the large lid over and press its tuck-in flap down behind the front wall.

The tuck-in flap holds the lid shut without tape or a sticker. On a large box that matters, because a lid this wide can lift at the front if it only rests on the walls.

How many 14 inch boxes fit in a delivery bag?

Check the inside floor of your bag first. It needs at least 362 mm square of clear space, or the boxes tilt and the toppings slide to one side.

Each closed box stands 44 mm tall. Four stacked come to about 176 mm and five to about 220 mm, so measure the bag height and work it out from there.

Many bags made for large pizzas take four or five 14 inch boxes. A bag bought for 12 inch boxes will not take them lying flat, so check before you add larges to the menu.

Stack the boxes square, wall over wall, so each lid carries the box above along its edges rather than in the middle.

How should a 14 inch pizza be cut for the box?

Most shops cut a 14 inch pizza into eight or ten slices. For parties and office lunches, a grid of small squares feeds more people from one box and suits thin, crisp bases.

Slice your large on the peel or a cutting board, and only then move it into the box. A rocker blade pressed down inside the box cuts into the base board and leaves it weak along the cut lines.

If you do cut inside the box, a corrugated liner under the pizza takes the blade first and takes up oil from the base. B-flute also gives the blade a little more board to press against than E-flute.

Delivery and stacking beside the oven

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Boxes then arrive flat, with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days.

A flat 14 inch sheet is wider than the folded box, so measure the shelf or rack where you plan to keep them. Store the flats dry and lying level so the creases stay true.

Keep a short pile folded beside the oven for the rush and the rest flat in the store room. Folded boxes take up far more space, so fold only what the next hour of orders needs.

Mistakes to avoid with 14 inch boxes

Most problems with the large size come from a few small choices made when ordering or packing.

  • Ordering 14 inch boxes for pizzas that stretch past 14 inch on busy nights
  • Choosing E-flute for long delivery runs where boxes sit stacked in a bag
  • Packing a deep pan large into the standard 1.75 in box
  • Placing key artwork over a fold line or the tuck-in flap
  • Using a delivery bag sized for 12 inch boxes
  • Cutting hard inside the box without a liner underneath

14 Inch Pizza Boxes questions

All help topics
What are the inside measurements of 14 Inch Pizza Boxes?

Inside, the box is 14.25 x 14.25 x 1.75 in (362 x 362 x 44 mm). That fits a 14 inch (356 mm) pizza with a little room around the crust.

Should 14 Inch Pizza Boxes be B-flute or E-flute?

B-flute suits delivery, because the thicker wall keeps a wide lid flat in a stack. E-flute is fine for counter collection over short distances.

Will a 15 inch pizza fit in a 14 inch box?

No, the crust would press against the walls and the lid may not close cleanly. Choose the 16 inch box or ask for a box made to your size.

How many 14 inch boxes fit in one delivery bag?

Check the bag floor gives at least 362 mm square, then divide its height by 44 mm per box. Many large pizza bags take four or five.

Do 14 Inch Pizza Boxes come in white and brown kraft?

Yes, both board colours are available in B-flute and E-flute. White shows bright colours well, and kraft gives a warm, plain look.

Can you print the sides of a 14 inch box as well as the lid?

Yes, you can print the lid, the sides and inside the lid. Side print shows your name when boxes stand stacked on a counter.

Is there a deeper 14 inch box for deep pan pizza?

The standard depth is 1.75 in, which suits normal larges. For deep pan, send us the size you need and we make the box to it.

Should I cut a 14 inch pizza inside the box?

It is better to cut on a board or peel and then slide it in. If you cut in the box, add a corrugated pizza box liner cut to size under the base.

Do 14 Inch Pizza Boxes arrive flat or folded?

They arrive flat as single die-cut sheets. Your team folds them by hand and closes each one with the front tuck-in flap.

Can I order 14 inch and 12 inch boxes with the same print?

Yes, you can order several sizes on one quote with matching artwork. We send a proof for each size so the layout fits every lid.

How long do printed 14 Inch Pizza Boxes take to arrive?

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days.

Do 14 inch boxes have vents to let steam out?

Yes, side vents let steam escape while the lid stays closed. On a large box that helps keep the crust from going soft on the way.
