Why kraft hides oil marks

Oil from a hot base soaks into any board it touches. On natural brown kraft the patch blends into the colour, so the box still looks tidy when it is handed over.

What are brown kraft pizza boxes and who uses them?

Brown kraft pizza boxes are square corrugated boxes made from board with a natural brown face. The colour runs through the lid, base and inside walls, so the box looks the same open or shut.

They suit takeaways that want a plain, honest look and wood-fired pizza vans at markets. Pubs with an oven out the back use them too, as do dark kitchens sending out delivery orders all evening. Many shops start with plain boxes and add a one-colour logo later.

The board is the same corrugated kraft whether you order a single size or all six.

Why does a kraft box hide oil marks better than white?

Hot cheese and oil soak into any corrugated board. On a white box the patch turns grey and shows through the lid. By the time it reaches the door, the box looks tired.

Brown kraft starts darker, so the same patch blends into the board. A margherita with a little chilli oil still arrives in a box that looks clean.

This matters most for greasy toppings, garlic butter crusts and long delivery runs. If you want a bright canvas for detailed print instead, white board is the other choice.

What size brown kraft box does your pizza need?

Each box is a quarter inch wider than the pizza on the inside and 1.75 in deep. That gap lets the base slide in off the peel without catching the crust on the wall. A 12 inch pizza, for example, goes into a 12.25 x 12.25 x 1.75 in box.

Pizza sizeBox size (inside)
7 inch (178 mm)7.25 x 7.25 x 1.75 in (184 x 184 x 44 mm)
9 inch (229 mm)9.25 x 9.25 x 1.75 in (235 x 235 x 44 mm)
10 inch (254 mm)10.25 x 10.25 x 1.75 in (260 x 260 x 44 mm)
12 inch (305 mm)12.25 x 12.25 x 1.75 in (311 x 311 x 44 mm)
14 inch (356 mm)14.25 x 14.25 x 1.75 in (362 x 362 x 44 mm)
16 inch (406 mm)16.25 x 16.25 x 1.75 in (413 x 413 x 44 mm)

For deep pan, long flatbreads or an odd size, send the measurement and we make the box to it. Our pizza box sizes in inches and mm guide lists every standard size side by side.

E-flute or B-flute kraft: which board should you choose?

Both boards come in brown kraft. E-flute is about 1.5 mm thick and folds crisply. It takes fine print detail well, so it suits 7 to 12 inch pizzas for counter collection. If most of your orders are collected within a few minutes, E-flute is usually enough.

B-flute is about 3 mm thick. The thicker wall keeps warmth in a little longer than E-flute does. It also keeps its shape better across a 14 or 16 inch base. Drivers who stack several boxes in one bag usually prefer it.

Still unsure? Our guide to E-flute vs B-flute pizza boxes compares the two for each pizza size.

How does print look on brown kraft board?

Ink on kraft sits on a brown base, not a white one. That changes how colours read from across the counter.

Darker inks read best. Black, deep red, navy and forest green stand out clearly on the natural brown face. Pale yellow, light grey and soft pastels sink into the board and lose their edge.

  • Plain: no print, just the natural brown kraft
  • One colour: a single dark ink, often black or deep red, on the lid
  • Two colours: a dark ink for the logo and a second for a phone number or border
  • Full colour: possible on kraft, with colours looking warmer and more muted than on white

Print can go on the lid, around the four sides and on the inside of the lid. Gloss or matt varnish is an option over the printed area.

Printing your logo on the lid and sides

A one-colour logo in the centre of the lid is the most common job on kraft. It looks clean, keeps the brown showing around it and reads well in a stack on the counter.

Side printing is worth adding if boxes sit on a shelf or travel in a clear delivery bag. A phone number or web address along one side helps repeat customers find you again.

Inside the lid you can print a short message, a menu prompt or an offer code. Build your artwork with Design Your Pizza Box online. You get a free proof, and nothing is printed until you approve it.

How do steam vents work on a kraft pizza box?

A fresh pizza gives off steam as soon as the lid closes. If that steam has nowhere to go, it settles on the base and softens the crust.

Small vents cut into the side walls let moist air escape while the lid stays shut. Ask for side vents when you request your quote, and we cut them into the die for every box.

Vents matter most on long delivery runs and on thicker B-flute boxes. For more ways to keep crusts crisp, read about keeping pizza hot and crisp in delivery.

How does a brown kraft box fold and lock?

Boxes arrive flat as one die-cut piece. Folding takes a few seconds once you have done a handful.

  1. Lay the flat box on the counter with the base panel in the middle.
  2. Fold up the front and two side walls along the creases.
  3. Turn the corner ears inwards so they sit flat against the side walls.
  4. Fold the double back wall over the ears to lock them in place.
  5. Bring the lid down and push the front tuck flap inside the front wall.
  6. Check the finger notches line up so the lid lifts open easily.

The tuck flap holds the lid shut without tape or stickers, and it opens again cleanly at the door.

How are kraft boxes delivered, and where do they stack near the oven?

Brown kraft pizza boxes come flat, packed in bundles. Delivery is free and tracked to the UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days. Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof.

Flat bundles slide onto a shelf or stand on end beside the prep bench. Before service, fold a stack of each size and keep it within reach of the peel. Keep bundles away from the sink and the dough mixer, since damp board loses its crispness.

Folded boxes stack squarely on top of each other. A driver can stack four closed boxes in one bag, largest at the bottom, and the lids stay level.

Mistakes to avoid with kraft pizza boxes

Most problems with kraft boxes come from artwork choices or the wrong size. The six slips below turn up again and again on kraft orders.

  • Choosing pale ink colours that disappear into the brown board
  • Setting a phone number in very small type that is hard to read on brown
  • Ordering E-flute for 16 inch pizzas that travel a long way by car
  • Measuring the pizza tray rather than the baked pizza, which can spread a little in the oven
  • Skipping side vents on boxes that carry pizza on long delivery runs
  • Packing a hot pizza into a loosely folded box, so the tuck flap pops open

Your free proof is the place to catch most of these. Check ink colours, text size and box size before you approve it.

How to order brown kraft pizza boxes

Tell us the pizza sizes you need, the board and whether you want plain or printed boxes. Prices start from £0.25 a box, and each job is priced on your quote.

Send a logo if you have one, or build a lid design first. You get a quote by email within one working day, then a free design proof to check.

Low minimums are quoted per job, so a small market van can order a short run. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Once your kraft sizes and board are settled, fill in the pizza box quote request form.

Brown Kraft Pizza Boxes questions

All help topics
Do brown kraft pizza boxes hide oil marks better than white boxes?

Yes. Oil still soaks into the board, but the darker brown face hides the patch far better than white board does. Boxes look tidier when they reach the customer.

Which ink colours read best on brown kraft pizza boxes?

Dark inks such as black, deep red, navy and forest green. Pale colours like light yellow or soft grey sink into the brown and lose contrast.

Can brown kraft pizza boxes be printed in full colour?

Yes. Full colour works on kraft, though the brown base makes every colour look warmer and slightly muted. Your free proof shows how the design sits on the board before anything is printed.

Is the inside of a brown kraft pizza box brown as well?

Yes, the board is natural kraft on both faces, so the base and the inside of the lid are brown. You can still print a message inside the lid.

Can I order plain brown kraft pizza boxes with no print at all?

Yes. Plain kraft boxes are a common choice for vans and pubs, and you can move to printed boxes later in the same sizes.

What sizes do brown kraft pizza boxes come in?

The six standard sizes fit 7, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch pizzas, each 1.75 in deep. For an odd size or a deeper kraft box for deep pan, send the measurement and we make the box to fit it.

Should I pick E-flute or B-flute for brown kraft pizza boxes?

E-flute suits smaller pizzas and fine print. B-flute has a thicker wall and suits 14 and 16 inch pizzas or longer delivery runs.

Can brown kraft pizza boxes have side vents?

Yes. Ask for side vents on your quote and they are cut into every box, letting steam out so the crust stays crisper.

How does a one-colour logo look on a brown kraft lid?

A single dark ink in the centre of the lid looks clean and reads well from across the counter. For layout tips, see our guide to printing your logo on a pizza box.

Can I add matt or gloss varnish to brown kraft pizza boxes?

Yes, matt or gloss varnish can go over the printed areas. Mention it when you ask for a quote and it will show on your proof.

Do brown kraft pizza boxes arrive flat or folded?

Kraft boxes reach you flat in bundles, and each one folds up by hand in a few seconds. The front tuck flap locks the lid without tape.

How soon do printed brown kraft pizza boxes reach my kitchen?

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days.
