What are custom printed pizza boxes and who uses them?
Custom printed pizza boxes are square corrugated boxes with your logo and colours printed on the lid. They come in the six standard UK takeaway sizes, from 7 inch to 16 inch.
Pizzerias and takeaways use them so every box that leaves the counter carries the shop name. Street food vans and market stalls use them so customers remember them after the event.
Pubs that serve pizza and dark kitchens order them too. A plain box goes straight in the bin. A printed lid sits on the kitchen table while the customer eats, with your name and number in view.
What size printed box does your pizza need?
Each box is a quarter inch wider than the pizza inside it and 1.75 in deep. That small gap lets the base slide in off the peel without catching the crust on the wall. Your artwork is sized to the lid, so pick the box size before you design.
| Pizza size | Box size (inside) |
|---|---|
| 7 inch (178 mm) | 7.25 x 7.25 x 1.75 in (184 x 184 x 44 mm) |
| 9 inch (229 mm) | 9.25 x 9.25 x 1.75 in (235 x 235 x 44 mm) |
| 10 inch (254 mm) | 10.25 x 10.25 x 1.75 in (260 x 260 x 44 mm) |
| 12 inch (305 mm) | 12.25 x 12.25 x 1.75 in (311 x 311 x 44 mm) |
| 14 inch (356 mm) | 14.25 x 14.25 x 1.75 in (362 x 362 x 44 mm) |
| 16 inch (406 mm) | 16.25 x 16.25 x 1.75 in (413 x 413 x 44 mm) |
Deeper boxes for deep pan and other sizes are made to the size you send. Our guide to pizza box sizes in inches and mm shows how to measure a pizza that falls outside the chart.
Which board suits a printed pizza box?
You choose between E-flute, about 1.5 mm thick, and B-flute, about 3 mm thick. Both are corrugated board in white or brown kraft.
E-flute has a smoother, flatter face, so fine lines and small text print crisply. It also folds tight and takes less room on the shelf.
B-flute has a thicker wall. It holds heat a little longer than E-flute and keeps its shape better on a 14 or 16 inch box carried in one hand.
White board shows colours bright and true. Brown kraft gives a warmer look that suits a wood-fired menu. Read E-flute vs B-flute pizza boxes for a side-by-side comparison.
Print on the lid, the sides and inside the lid
The lid is the main print area. Most designs put the logo in the centre, with the phone number or web address near the front edge.
You can add print in three places:
- The lid: your logo, colours and contact details, seen first at the counter
- The sides: a band of colour, a repeat logo or a short line that shows when boxes are stacked
- Inside the lid: a menu, a thank-you note or a QR code the customer sees on opening
Side print is worth having if boxes stand in a pile on the counter or travel in a delivery bag. Our guide to printing your logo on a pizza box covers artwork and placement.
Should you choose one colour, two colours or full colour?
One colour is the simplest choice. A single red or black logo on brown kraft looks bold and clean, and the board colour does the rest.
Two colours give you a logo plus an accent, such as a coloured border or a second line of text. It works well on white board, where both colours stay sharp.
Full colour prints photos, gradients and detailed illustrations. On white board the colours look bright. On brown kraft they print warmer and slightly darker, because the board shows through the ink.
Matt or gloss varnish can go over the print. Gloss makes colours look richer. Matt gives a softer, flatter finish.
Which printed setup suits your kitchen?
A busy takeaway sending most orders out on delivery often picks white B-flute with a full-colour lid. The thicker wall copes better when boxes are stacked in a bag.
A wood-fired van at a market may prefer brown kraft E-flute with one colour. Flat bundles pack into a small van, and the print matches a simple chalkboard menu.
A pub kitchen serving pizza on match days might print one colour on the lid and add the pub name on the sides. Stacked boxes on the bar then show the name from every angle.
How does a printed pizza box let steam out?
A hot pizza gives off steam as soon as the lid closes. If that steam has nowhere to go, it softens the crust and can mark the print from the inside.
You can ask for vent holes cut into the side walls or the back of the lid. Steam leaves through them while the box rides in a bag, so the base stays crisper.
Keep key artwork away from vent positions, so a hole never cuts through your logo. See keeping pizza hot and crisp in delivery for more on steam and travel.
How the box folds and locks
Your printed box comes as a single flat sheet of board, ready to fold. It folds into shape in a few seconds, with no glue or tape.
- Lay the flat box print side down, with the lid furthest from you.
- Lift the printed front wall and both side walls of the base upright.
- Slot the corner flaps behind the printed side walls to keep the base square.
- Fold the lid over and push its front flap down inside the front wall.
- Use the thumb notch in the front wall to lift the lid open at the counter.
The tuck-in front flap holds the lid shut while a driver carries the box flat. Your staff can fold a stack before service and keep them ready by the oven.
How do printed boxes arrive and stack beside the oven?
Your boxes arrive flat, in bundles by size. Free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days once production is done.
Flat boxes take up little room. A bundle slides onto a shelf above the prep counter or stands on its edge beside the oven.
Folded boxes stack neatly because the lids sit flat. A driver can stack four boxes in a bag, and the printed sides line up so your name shows on every one.
Keep stock away from the oven door and off a wet floor, as damp board softens and dulls the print. If a bundle arrives damaged or misprinted, report it within 10 days and we reprint or refund it.
Mistakes to avoid with a printed lid
Most problems come from the artwork, not the box. Check these points before you send your design.
- Very small text can blur on corrugated board, so keep phone numbers and web addresses large
- Thin white lines in a full-colour design can fill in on brown kraft
- A logo placed right up to the lid edge can be cut by the fold, so leave a margin
- A design made for one size will not fit another lid without resizing
- Dark full-colour backgrounds show scuffs more than a light lid
Your free design proof shows each of these issues before anything is printed. We only print your lid once you have signed off the proof.

Custom Printed Pizza Boxes questions
Can custom printed pizza boxes be printed on the sides as well as the lid?
Yes. You can add print to the side walls and inside the lid as well as the lid itself. Side print shows when boxes are stacked on the counter or in a delivery bag.
Which sizes do custom printed pizza boxes come in?
They come in 7, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch, all square and 1.75 in deep. For deep pan or a pizza outside the chart, we make your printed box to the measurements you send.
What does one-colour print look like on a brown kraft printed pizza box?
It looks bold and simple, with the brown board acting as the second colour. Dark inks such as black, red or deep green stand out best, while pale inks sink into the board.
Can I print full-colour photos on custom printed pizza boxes?
Yes. Photos print brightest on white board. On brown kraft they look warmer and a little darker because the board shows through.
Should I choose E-flute or B-flute for custom printed pizza boxes?
E-flute, about 1.5 mm, has a smoother face for fine print and folds tight. B-flute, about 3 mm, has a thicker wall that holds heat a little longer and keeps larger boxes firm.
Can the inside of the lid on custom printed pizza boxes carry a menu?
Yes. Inside lid print is a good place for a menu, an offer or a QR code. The customer sees it the moment they open the box.
Can one design work across all six sizes of custom printed pizza boxes?
Yes, the same artwork can be resized for each lid. Your proof shows every size, so you can check the logo still reads well on the 7 inch box.
How long do custom printed pizza boxes take from proof to delivery?
Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days.
Can I add a matt or gloss varnish to custom printed pizza boxes?
Yes, either finish can go over the print. Gloss makes colours look richer, and matt gives a softer, flatter look.
Can custom printed pizza boxes have vent holes in the side walls?
Yes, ask for vent holes when you request your quote. Keep your logo clear of the vent positions so no hole cuts through it.
What happens if my custom printed pizza boxes arrive misprinted?
Send photos to info@thepizzaboxes.co.uk within 10 days of delivery. Misprinted or damaged boxes are reprinted or refunded.
