What are round pizza boxes and who uses them?

How much empty space does a round box save?

A square box has four corners the pizza never reaches. On a round pizza those corners are dead air, and the pizza can slide into one when a driver brakes.

A round box leaves a thin, even ring of clearance all the way round. An eight-sided box trims the corners off, so most of that dead space goes.

What size round box does a 12 inch pizza need?

Measure the cooked pizza, not the dough ball, because a base spreads as it bakes on the deck. Send us that diameter and we set the inside of the box just over it.

Should you choose a round or an eight-sided box?

A round box gives the closest fit and the softest look on the counter. The lid fits over the base, and small notches in the rim give your thumb somewhere to lift it.

An eight-sided box is built from flat panels, so its walls are straight rather than curved. Text and contact details print cleanly across those flat side panels.

If you want plenty of print on the sides, go eight-sided. If the lid artwork is the star, a round lid frames it like a plate.

Which board suits a round pizza box?

E-flute is about 1.5 mm thick and gives a smooth, crisp surface for lid print. It suits thin bases and pizzas that go out by counter collection.

B-flute is about 3 mm thick. It holds heat a little longer than E-flute because the wall is thicker, and it feels firmer in the hand under a loaded pizza.

How does print look on a round lid and curved wall?

A round lid is a circle of artwork, so design from the centre outwards. A logo in the middle with a ring of pattern near the rim reads well from any angle on the counter.

One-colour dark green or black on brown kraft looks calm and simple. Full colour on white board suits strong reds and photos. Print can go on the lid, the side wall and the inside of the lid, with matt or gloss varnish as an option.

Should you order round boxes plain or printed?

Plain brown kraft round boxes suit a small van or a stall whose menu changes often. The shape alone makes the pizza stand out at the hatch.

A one-colour logo on the lid is a small step up from plain. Two colours or full colour make sense once the box is part of your brand, or when you sell frozen pizza and the lid has to do the selling.

How do steam vents work on round pizza boxes?

A hot pizza gives off steam, and trapped steam softens the crust. The notches in a round rim let some of that moisture escape while the lid stays closed.

How do round boxes arrive and stack beside the oven?

Eight-sided boxes fold up from flat pieces, much like a square pizza box. Round boxes come as lids and bases, and your quote tells you exactly how they are packed.

Keep a short stack of bases on the pass with the lids beside them. Once the team has boxed a few, matching lid to base takes a second. This is the order most kitchens settle on:

1. Set a base on the pass with the rim notches facing you
2. Slide the pizza off the peel into the centre of the base
3. Lower the lid straight down so its rim meets the base wall
4. Press gently round the edge until the lid sits level
5. Stack the closed boxes lid side up for the driver

Closed round boxes stack neatly because every lid is the same circle. A driver can stack four in a bag with no corners catching on the zip.

What mistakes should you avoid with round pizza boxes?

Most problems come from the size, not the shape. Check these points before you send your order.

• Measuring raw dough instead of the baked pizza
• Sending a radius when we asked for the full diameter
• Placing small text close to the rim, where it is hard to read
• Choosing E-flute for deep, heavily topped pizzas that need a firmer wall
• Ordering one diameter when your menu has two pizza sizes

If your bakes vary by a few millimetres, size the box to your largest pizza, not your average one.
