What is a pizza box separator and who uses one?

A pizza box separator is a flat sheet of corrugated board. It sits between two pizzas packed in one deeper box, or rests on the crust edge just under the lid.

Takeaways use them for two-pizza deals where both pizzas share a single box. Market stalls and vans use them to send a stacked pair home with one carry.

Dark kitchens like them on busy nights, because one deeper box and a separator replace two boxes on the pass. You can see the other add-ons in the Pizza Box Sides and Extras range.

When does one deeper box with a separator beat two boxes?

Two pizzas in one box take up one slot in the delivery bag instead of two. That leaves room for side orders and drinks on the same run.

It also cuts the number of boxes you fold on a busy night. One deeper box, one separator and two pizzas go out faster than two standard boxes.

Stick with two boxes when the pizzas differ in size, or when one goes to a different address. A separator works best for a matched pair on one order.

What size separator does my pizza box need?

A separator is cut to the inside of the box, not to the pizza. It should drop in flat without bowing and without leaving a wide gap at the walls.

Too small and it slides off the lower pizza in the bag. Too big and it bows up into the top pizza.

Standard boxes run a quarter inch over the pizza. The separator matches that inside measurement, so it covers the whole pizza below and stays level.

Deeper boxes for two stacked pizzas are made to the size you send. The guide to pizza box sizes in inches and mm lists every standard box.

Which board suits a separator, E-flute or B-flute?

E-flute is about 1.5 mm thick. It is the usual choice for a separator under the lid, because it adds almost no height inside the box.

B-flute is about 3 mm thick. It suits a separator carrying a second pizza, because the thicker wall stays flatter across a 14 inch or 16 inch span.

Both come in brown kraft or white. For the full difference, read E-flute vs B-flute pizza boxes compared.

  • E-flute: a thin layer under the lid, for small and medium pizzas
  • B-flute: two stacked pizzas, especially in 14 inch and 16 inch boxes
  • Brown kraft: matches kraft boxes and shows oil marks less
  • White: a clean look in white boxes, and a bright base for printed colour

If you are unsure, send the pizza size and we will suggest a board on your quote.

Kraft or white: matching the separator to the box

Most buyers match the separator to the box. A brown kraft sheet in a brown kraft box looks like part of the pack when the lid lifts.

A white sheet suits white boxes, including boxes printed in one colour inside the lid. Against a red inside lid, a white separator reads clean and bright.

Mixing works too. A white separator inside a kraft box gives the top pizza a lighter base to sit on. Tell us the box you already use, and we match the board to it.

Can a pizza box separator be printed?

Most separators go out plain, since a pizza covers the face. Where the sheet sits under the lid, print can show when the customer opens the box.

A short line, a logo or an order number in one colour on brown kraft works well. Full colour is possible, though few kitchens need it on a layer the pizza hides.

Print on the separator can also carry a message for a party order or a match day deal. Every printed separator gets a free design proof first, and nothing is printed until you approve it.

Does a separator trap steam between two pizzas?

Steam rises off the bottom pizza and meets the underside of the separator. A sheet that seals the box edge to edge holds that steam against the lower crust.

To avoid that, the separator can be cut with small notches at the corners or a vent hole near the centre. Air then moves past the sheet and out through the box vents.

Ask for vents on your quote if both pizzas travel together. More delivery advice sits in keeping pizza hot and crisp in delivery.

How do you fit a separator in a stacked box?

Fitting takes a few seconds at the pass. The order below keeps the top pizza level and the cheese on the bottom pizza untouched.

  1. Fold and lock the deeper box, then slide the first pizza onto the base.
  2. Lay the separator flat over the bottom pizza, printed side up.
  3. Check it rests level on the crust edge and clears the topping.
  4. Slide the second pizza onto the separator, keeping it centred.
  5. Close the lid and tuck in the flaps so nothing shifts in the bag.

For a single pizza, rest the separator on the crust edge under the lid. It stops the lid pressing into tall toppings.

How separators arrive and stack beside the oven

Separators arrive flat, bundled by size, in the same delivery as your boxes. Delivery is free and tracked across UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days.

A bundle stands on its edge beside the flat boxes, so one hand grabs a box and the other a sheet. Keep them off the oven top, where heat and steam curl the board.

Store spare bundles flat in a dry corner, since damp softens corrugated board and makes sheets bow. Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof.

Mistakes to avoid with Pizza Box Separators

A few small slips cause most separator problems. Check these before you order.

  • Ordering the separator to the pizza size instead of the box inside
  • Using a standard 1.75 in deep box for two pizzas, which crushes the top one
  • Choosing E-flute for a 16 inch stack, where B-flute stays flatter
  • Sealing two hot pizzas together with no vent notches
  • Printing fine detail on a face the pizza will cover
  • Leaving separators on a wet counter, where the board soaks up spills

If a delivery arrives with a misprint or damage, report it within 10 days. We reprint or refund it.

Pizza Box Separators questions

All help topics
Do Pizza Box Separators go under the lid or between two pizzas?

They do both. A separator can rest on the crust edge under the lid, or sit between two pizzas stacked in one deeper box.

Which board do you recommend for Pizza Box Separators carrying a second pizza?

B-flute, at about 3 mm. Its thicker wall stays flatter under a second pizza, especially in 14 inch and 16 inch boxes.

Are Pizza Box Separators cut to the pizza size or the box size?

To the inside of the box. For a 12 inch pizza in a 12.25 x 12.25 x 1.75 in (311 x 311 x 44 mm) box, the separator matches that inside measurement.

Can Pizza Box Separators have vent notches or a vent hole?

Yes. Ask for corner notches or a centre hole on your quote, so steam from the bottom pizza can move past the sheet.

Can I get Pizza Box Separators in white board for a white box?

Yes. Separators come in white or brown kraft, in E-flute or B-flute, so you can match the box you already use.

Can my logo go on Pizza Box Separators?

Yes, the separator board takes your logo in one colour, two colours or full colour. We send a free design proof of the separator print first, and the sheets stay unprinted until you sign it off.

Do I need a deeper box to stack two pizzas with a separator?

Yes. A standard 1.75 in deep box only fits one pizza, so stacked pairs need a deeper box made to the size you send.

Do you make Pizza Box Separators for long or round boxes?

Yes. Send the inside measurement of the box and we cut the separator to match it.

How are Pizza Box Separators priced?

They are priced on your quote, based on size, board, print and quantity. We email the separator price back to you within one working day.

How long do printed Pizza Box Separators take to make?

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked delivery to UK mainland then takes 2 to 3 working days.

What is the difference between Pizza Box Separators and liners?

A separator sits above a pizza, between two pizzas or under the lid. Pizza Box Liners under the base sit below the pizza and take up oil.

Can Pizza Box Separators arrive in the same delivery as my boxes?

Yes. Order both on the same quote and they arrive together, cut from the same box measurement.
