What are Frozen Pizza Boxes and who uses them?
Frozen Pizza Boxes are printed retail cartons for brands that sell frozen pizza through shops, delis and farm shops. The carton is the first thing a shopper sees, so it carries your photography, your name and the facts they need.
They suit small frozen brands, pizzerias selling a take-home range and farm shops that bake their own. You will find them alongside the other cartons in our slice and speciality pizza boxes range.
Unlike a takeaway box, this carton lives on a shelf or in a display cabinet. It needs to look sharp from a step away and stack neatly against the next one. Each carton is printed to your own artwork, so the pack looks like your kitchen, not a stock box.
What size carton does a frozen pizza need?
Measure the pizza after it is topped and before it is packed. Toppings often sit past the crust line, so take the widest point, not the size of the tray.
A retail carton is cut close to the pizza so it does not slide about inside. Takeaway boxes allow a quarter inch over the pizza, and frozen cartons usually keep that margin with a much shallower depth.
| Pizza size | Standard footprint (takeaway box) | Common use in a frozen range |
|---|---|---|
| 7 inch (178 mm) | 7.25 x 7.25 x 1.75 in (184 x 184 x 44 mm) | Small bases and children's pizzas |
| 9 inch (229 mm) | 9.25 x 9.25 x 1.75 in (235 x 235 x 44 mm) | Personal pizzas for one |
| 10 inch (254 mm) | 10.25 x 10.25 x 1.75 in (260 x 260 x 44 mm) | Thin bases for one or two |
| 12 inch (305 mm) | 12.25 x 12.25 x 1.75 in (311 x 311 x 44 mm) | Sharing pizzas for the family table |
Sizes outside this table, and the shallower retail depth, are made to the measurements you send. The table shows the standard footprint as a starting point.
Which board suits a retail frozen carton?
We make Frozen Pizza Boxes in E-flute (about 1.5 mm) or B-flute (about 3 mm) corrugated, in white or brown kraft. Most retail cartons use E-flute, because the thin wall keeps the carton slim and takes fine print well.
B-flute has a thicker wall, so it suits larger pizzas or cartons handled many times between kitchen and shop. For a side-by-side look, read our guide comparing E-flute and B-flute.
White board shows photography with clean, true colour. Brown kraft gives a rustic farm shop look, though full-colour photos print a little darker on it.
If you sell several flavours, one board and one size across the range keeps packing simple. Only the print changes from flavour to flavour.
Printing photography, ingredients and a barcode panel
Full colour is the natural choice, because shoppers choose frozen pizza with their eyes. A sharp photo of the cooked pizza on the lid sells harder than any line of text.
Plan the panels before the artwork starts. You supply the wording and the barcode, and we print them exactly where your file places them.
- Lid: a large photo of the cooked pizza, your brand name and the flavour
- Front edge: the flavour and pizza size, so the carton still reads when stacked
- Back or side panel: ingredients, allergens and the cooking directions you write
- Barcode panel: a flat, clear area for the code you supply
- Inside the lid: an optional recipe idea or note from your kitchen
Matt varnish gives a soft, modern finish, while gloss makes photography look richer. You can lay out every panel on our Design Your Pizza Box page.
Do Frozen Pizza Boxes need vents?
Takeaway boxes have side vents so steam can leave on the way to a customer. A frozen pizza is packed cold, so most brands leave the vents off.
That keeps every panel whole for print and stops crumbs falling through holes onto a shop shelf. If you box pizzas straight after baking, let them cool first so no moisture gathers under the lid.
Vents can still be added where your process needs them. Mention it when you ask for a quote and they will appear on your proof.
How does the carton fold and lock?
Cartons arrive flat and fold along creased lines into a tray with a hinged lid. The lid closes with a tuck-in front flap that slides behind the front wall, as in the second photo.
Some brands prefer tuck ends instead, where the carton opens from one short side. Both styles fold by hand in seconds once your team has done a few.
- Lay the flat carton print side down on a clean bench.
- Fold the side walls up and tuck the corner flaps inside them.
- Fold the front wall up and press its flaps into place.
- Slide the pizza in on its base board or in its wrap.
- Close the lid and push the tuck-in flap behind the front wall.
Delivery, storage and stacking in your packing area
Your cartons arrive flat by free tracked UK mainland delivery, which takes 2 to 3 working days. Flat packs keep the delivery compact and easy to carry in.
Store the pile low beside the packing bench and fold only what each batch needs. Keep it dry and off the floor so the board stays flat and the print stays clean.
Filled cartons stack square because the lid sits flat on the walls. That gives neat columns in your own storage and on a shop display.
Order a little ahead of a busy selling period so you never run short of printed cartons.
What mistakes should frozen brands avoid?
The most common is sizing the carton to the tray, not the pizza. Measure the topped pizza at its widest point and send that figure.
Next comes a crowded barcode. Give it clear space on a flat panel and never run it across a fold.
Small type on brown kraft is another trap. Fine ingredient text reads best on white board or on a solid printed panel.
Finally, read the proof line by line before you approve it. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded, as explained in how our reprints and refunds work.
Square, eight-sided and long frozen cartons
Square cartons are the usual choice, because they stack tightest on a shelf and in a packing area. They also give the largest flat lid for photography.
Eight-sided cartons have their corners cut away, which makes them stand out next to plain square packs. The second photo shows one printed full colour on a black ground, with the print running down the sides.
Long cartons suit flatbreads, folded pizzas and rectangular bakes. Every shape takes the same full-colour print, panels and varnish options.
Tell us the shape when you ask for a quote, and it is drawn to your pizza on the proof.

Can Frozen Pizza Boxes carry a photo of our pizza?
Yes. Full-colour print covers the lid and sides, so a photo of the cooked pizza can run edge to edge. Send a high-resolution image and it appears on your free proof.
Do you add the barcode to Frozen Pizza Boxes for us?
You supply the barcode and we print it where your artwork places it. Keep it on a flat panel with clear space around it, away from any fold.
Who writes the ingredients panel on a frozen pizza carton?
You do. Send the wording, allergens and cooking directions, and we print them as supplied. Then check every line on the proof before you approve it.
Can Frozen Pizza Boxes be made shallower than a takeaway box?
Yes. Frozen cartons are made to the depth you send, so the carton sits close to the pizza with little empty space above it.
Which board do most brands choose for Frozen Pizza Boxes?
Most choose white E-flute, about 1.5 mm, because it keeps the carton slim and shows photography cleanly. B-flute, about 3 mm, suits larger pizzas.
Can a frozen pizza carton be printed on brown kraft?
Yes. Brown kraft gives a farm shop look, and full-colour photos print slightly darker on it. Large type and bold panels read best.
Do Frozen Pizza Boxes have side vents?
Most frozen brands leave vents off, because the pizza is packed cold and the panels stay whole for print. Vents can be added if you ask.
Are Frozen Pizza Boxes available as eight-sided cartons?
Yes. Eight-sided cartons with cut corners stand out on a shelf and still stack square. Square and long shapes are made too.
How do Frozen Pizza Boxes close?
Most close with a tuck-in front flap that slides behind the front wall. Tuck ends that open from one short side are another option.
Can I print inside the lid of Frozen Pizza Boxes?
Yes. Inside-lid print suits a recipe idea, a note from your kitchen or serving suggestions. It shows on the proof with the outer panels.
How long do Frozen Pizza Boxes take to produce?
Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days.
Can a farm shop order Frozen Pizza Boxes for its own pizzas?
Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a farm shop range can start small. Our guide to choosing boxes for slices, calzone and frozen pizza covers the options.
