Choosing Boxes for Slices, Calzone and Frozen Pizza

Not every pizza leaves your kitchen whole in a square box, and slices, calzone, flatbread and frozen pizza each need their own shape. This guide shows you which box suits each one, how to size it and what to send us before you ask for a quote.

Which box suits slices, calzone and frozen pizza?

Think of a single slice at a market stall, a folded calzone or a long flatbread. Add a frozen pizza on a shop shelf, and you need four different boxes.

Picking the wrong one costs you twice. A slice slides about in a square box. A calzone gets squashed in a box that is too shallow. A plain carton goes unnoticed in a shop freezer.

This guide covers four formats: triangle slice boxes, long boxes made to size, printed retail cartons and open side trays. For each one you will see what it holds, which board to choose and how it is printed.

Slice boxes, long boxes and frozen cartons sit together in one speciality range. Side trays sit alongside them, so one order can cover the whole menu.

How does a slice box work at a counter or event?

A slice box is a shallow triangle that follows the shape of one cut slice. The lid hinges along the wide crust end and closes over the point, so the slice lies flat with room above the topping.

At a busy counter, build a batch before service and stand them on end beside the oven. Staff lift a slice from the tray, drop it in, tuck the flap and hand it over.

At events, festivals and match days, slice boxes shorten the queue because nobody waits for a whole pizza. Customers can eat straight from the open box like a plate.

White board shows a one-colour logo crisply, while brown kraft gives a market-stall look. You can see sizes and print options on the pizza slice boxes product page.

Tell us the length of your slice from point to crust and the width across the crust. We cut the triangle to fit your slice, not a generic one.

Long boxes for calzone and flatbread, made to your size

Calzone, flatbreads and long sharing pizzas do not fit a square box without wasted space or a squashed end. A long, shallow box made to your size holds them flat and centred.

The style in our photos opens like a standard pizza box. The base has folded walls, the lid tucks in at the front, and corner flaps keep the sides square.

These boxes are made to the size you send, so measure the bake, not the dough. A calzone rises and spreads in the oven. Measure a finished one at its longest, widest and tallest points.

Allow a little room on each side so the base slides in without catching the crust. We size the inside from your figures and show the measurements on the proof.

A dark outer print over a plain brown inside, as in our photos, gives a smart finish for collection. Full details are on the calzone and flatbread boxes page.

How do the four formats compare?

Use this table to match the food to the box before you ask for a quote. The same two flutes and two board colours run across every format.

Full colour is available on slice boxes and side trays too. One colour is simply the usual choice for counter food that sells quickly.

Frozen pizza cartons printed for the shelf

A frozen pizza carton works harder than a takeaway box. It has to sell the pizza from a shop freezer, carry the details a shopper reads and stack neatly on a shelf.

That is why our frozen pizza cartons are printed in full colour. In our sample photos, a large picture of the bake fills the front panel and does most of the selling.

The carton is a closed, flat box sized to your pizza and anything around it, such as a card base or wrap. Send the measurements of the wrapped pizza, not the bare base.

White board gives the brightest colour. A gloss varnish adds shine to food photography, while matt suits a quieter, hand-made look.

Who supplies the text on a frozen pizza carton?

You do. Ingredients, allergens, nutrition, cooking instructions, net quantity, barcode and your business address all come from your brand.

We print each panel exactly as supplied. We do not write or check legal wording, so have it signed off before you send artwork. Send these with your carton design:

  • Front panel design with the product name and main photo
  • Back panel with ingredients, allergens in bold and the nutrition table
  • Cooking instructions in the wording your brand has approved
  • Barcode as a vector file at the size your retailer asks for
  • A clear space for a best before date or batch code added on your line
  • Side panel artwork, often the flavour name so a carton reads when stacked on edge

Your free design proof shows every panel laid flat, with folds and cut lines marked. Check each panel against your own records, because nothing is printed until you approve it.

Side trays for garlic bread, wings and dips

Most pizza orders carry a side. An open board tray holds garlic bread, wings, chips or a dip pot and sits on top of the pizza box in the bag.

The trays in our photos are white board with folded walls and no lid. One holds a single slice, which suits a quick counter sale where the customer eats straight away.

For delivery, choose a small lidded box instead. The side then stays put when a driver stacks four boxes in a bag.

Side trays are priced on your quote. Match the board colour to your pizza boxes so the order looks like one set, and browse styles on the side order boxes page.

A plain tray with a one-colour logo on the end wall is often enough.

Which board should you choose for each format?

Both flutes come in white or brown kraft. E-flute is about 1.5 mm thick and gives a flat, smooth face that takes fine print well.

B-flute is about 3 mm thick. Its thicker wall holds heat a little longer than E-flute and keeps its shape a little better when boxes are stacked.

For slice boxes, side trays and frozen cartons, E-flute is usually the better match. The food is light or already wrapped, and the print matters more than the wall.

For a long box carrying a large calzone out on delivery, B-flute is worth a look. The thicker wall stays firmer in a full delivery bag.

White board makes full colour brighter. Brown kraft mutes colours slightly, so one-colour black or deep red reads best on it.

Mistakes to avoid with speciality pizza boxes

Measuring raw dough is the most common slip. A calzone or flatbread grows in the oven, and a box sized to the dough will pinch the crust.

The second mistake is printing the same layout on every format. A logo set out for a square lid can look cramped on the narrow lid of a slice box, so ask us to adjust it on the proof.

Frozen brands sometimes send a carton design with the barcode too small or with text running into a fold. Leave clear space on either side of every crease.

Finally, do not forget the sides. A plain tray next to a printed box makes the order feel unfinished. Our guide to printing your logo on a pizza box covers artwork in more detail.

How do you order slice, long or frozen pizza boxes?

Every format follows the same steps, from your first message to boxes at your door.

  1. Measure the finished food: slice length and crust width, the longest and widest point of a calzone, or the wrapped frozen pizza.
  2. Choose E-flute or B-flute, white or brown kraft, and the print you want on the lid, the sides or inside the lid.
  3. Send your measurements and artwork by email, phone or WhatsApp.
  4. Receive your quote by email within one working day.
  5. Check the free design proof and approve it once every panel is right.
  6. Your boxes are made in 4 to 6 working days, then sent with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days.

Ask for prices on the pizza box quote request page. Should a slice box, calzone box or frozen carton arrive misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days and we will reprint the boxes or refund you.

Questions this guide answers

All help topics
Can one slice box fit slices from both a 14 inch and a 16 inch pizza?

Not neatly. A slice box is cut to one slice length and crust width, so a smaller slice slides about. If you sell both, order two triangle sizes.

Do calzone boxes need to be deeper than a standard pizza box?

Often, yes. A folded calzone stands taller than a flat pizza. Measure a finished one at its highest point and we set the box depth from that figure.

Can a long flatbread box hold a sharing pizza cut into squares?

Yes, as long as the box is sized to the finished bake. Tell us the length and width of the tray you bake in and we size the inside to suit.

Can frozen pizza cartons carry nutrition and allergen panels?

Yes. We print every panel your brand supplies, exactly as sent. Checking that the wording meets your legal duties stays with your brand.

Can a frozen pizza carton be printed on the inside as well?

Yes, inside print is an option. Brands use it for serving ideas or a short message the buyer sees when they open the carton.

Which board shows food photography best on a frozen pizza carton?

White board. Full colour sits brighter on white than on brown kraft, and a gloss varnish adds extra shine to a photo of the bake.

Are slice boxes practical for outdoor events and market stalls?

Yes. They are light, quick to build and stack flat until service. Brown kraft with a one-colour logo suits the look of most market stalls.

Can side trays match the print on my slice or calzone boxes?

Yes. Choose the same board colour and send the same artwork, and we set it out to fit the smaller tray. Side trays are priced on your quote.

Do I get a separate proof for each speciality box format?

Yes. Each format gets its own free design proof, because the shapes and panels differ. Nothing is printed until you approve every one.

Can I order slice boxes, calzone boxes and frozen cartons on one quote?

Yes. List each format with its sizes and print, and one email quote covers them all within one working day.
